The Fightback Begins! - Photo's from our first Lancaster Protest

There was a good turnout - between 250 - 300 local people assembled to show their outrage against the massive cuts announced today. These cuts will hit the poorest in society who are now being made to pay for an economic crisis caused by the greed of the super-rich and their crazy banking system. The crowd chanted slogans ('They day cutback, we say fightback!') waved banners and listened to speeches. They then marched briefly around Dalton Square, arriving at a local meeting hall. After the demo, about 40 people remained, to hold a meeting inside the hall to plan further events and actions. More detailed report to follow.

  1. Great to see so many people there and with such a really positive mood that there is something we can do.

  3. At what stage will the Duke of Westminster sell up his 19,000 acres in Lancs ( out of a total of 758,490)? And he receives money from the taxpayer for the acres not in productive use. He could forgo his subsidy and hand over a tenth of his land to the county and that would prevent cuts. 113,379 acres of Lancs are owned by 106 landowners with holdings of over 500 acres. A land tax on those 106 people could bring in enough revenue to stop the cuts altogether. The population of Lancs is approximatley 1,500,000, of those 1,043,500 own no land at all ie nothing except their own dwelling of which there are 585,000. Most of those dwellings have no more than a small yard or garden. Yet it is the council tax on those dwellings which makes a significant contribution to the County's coffers. If the subsidy to large landowners like the Duke of W were abolished, the council tax could be abolished too. There is great wealth in the County and great poverty too and that will be much worse if the cuts are implemented. Take the money from the D of W. He'll hardly notice.
